The demolition of the old bridge over the Bóbr River in Bolesławiec drew the attention of residents, who pointed out construction elements ending up in the river. This raised questions about environmental safeguards and the possible effects of the work.
The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways returned to the matter. The spokesperson for GDDKiA’s Wrocław branch Magdalena Szumiata informed the service istotne.pl about the results of the inspection conducted after the demolition of the old bridge spans was completed.
The conclusion? No threat to fish and other aquatic organisms was found, nor was any hazardous substance found to have entered the river.
GDDKiA on the turbidity of the Bóbr River
The statement also addressed the issue of water turbidity, which could have increased during the work. According to GDDKiA, the phenomenon was short-lived and occurred outside the fish spawning period.
“The short-lived increase in water turbidity, which occurred outside the fish spawning period, did not pose a significant threat to aquatic life,” the spokesperson reported.
Pipe cover elements entered the river
GDDKiA also addressed the elements that ended up in the water during the work. As explained, these were fragments of pipe covers that entered the river as a result of changing weather conditions.
“The pipe cover elements that entered the river as a result of changing weather conditions were collected by the contractor and will be disposed of,” M. Szumiata reported.
The demolition of the bridge over the Bóbr River
Earlier, GDDKiA reported that the old bridge was being demolished mechanically, using excavators equipped with demolition hammers. The structure consisted primarily of concrete and reinforcing steel.
The Directorate also explained that before this stage of the work began, elements that could potentially pose a threat to the environment had been removed, including the bituminous surface, insulation and footway caps.
In response to earlier questions, it was stated that the work was being carried out under construction and environmental supervision.
