Railway Viaduct

View of the northwestern side. The camera shows one of the most spectacular urban structures. This monumental engineering landmark spanning the Bóbr River is 490 metres long and 26 metres high.

The thirty-five spans of the Bolesławiec viaduct were designed by the Prussian architect Fryderyk Engelhardt Gansel. Work on the crossing began on 18 June 1844. Construction lasted two years and involved nearly 4,000 people. The work was completed in 1846. Interestingly, in 1945, retreating Nazi forces blew up the central span as they withdrew from Bolesławiec. It was rebuilt in 1947.

In 2006, the viaduct spans were illuminated and 58 projectors were installed. In 2009, work on a complete renovation of the structure was completed. The stone viaduct was cleaned (sandblasted), and the structure underwent thorough conservation.
