Lower Silesian police officers once again remind drivers that excessive speed remains one of the main causes of the most tragic road accidents. Despite numerous appeals and preventive measures, there is still no shortage of drivers who ignore the applicable limits, putting themselves and other road users at risk.
The dangerous incident occurred on the A4 motorway. Officers stopped a BMW driver for inspection after recording him travelling at 203 km/h. As the officers point out, the speed limit on the section being monitored was 110 km/h, meaning that the man exceeded the permitted speed by 93 km/h.
A 58-year-old resident of Wrocław was behind the wheel. During the inspection, it turned out that this was not his first offence of this kind. Police determined that the driver had violated the regulations as a repeat road offender, meaning he had committed a similar offence again within two years of his previous punishment.
It was precisely this repeat offence that resulted in the fine being doubled, as provided for in the fine schedule. Ultimately, the 58-year-old was fined PLN 5,000. He also received 15 penalty points.
Police remind drivers that as speed increases, braking distance becomes significantly longer and the time available to react in a dangerous situation decreases. According to the officers, a vehicle travelling at 110 km/h needs approximately 60 metres to stop, while at 200 km/h the braking distance can increase to around 180 metres.
The officers appeal to drivers to use common sense and obey traffic regulations. Even on roads with high technical standards, a moment of recklessness can lead to a tragedy whose consequences will be felt for the rest of one’s life.
