The incident occurred on October 3 at approximately 7:10 p.m. The duty officer at the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica received a report that an intoxicated man had allegedly taken a small child away on one of the streets. A police patrol was immediately dispatched to the scene.
He grabbed the child and began walking away
Police determined that the five-year-old boy had been in the courtyard with other children. At one point, a 29-year-old man ran up to him, grabbed the boy, picked him up and began walking away with him.
The other children reacted immediately. They began screaming loudly and calling for help. Their behavior alerted the parents who were nearby, and they headed toward the man.
After running several dozen meters, the 29-year-old fell over together with the child. He then left the boy and tried to escape. Witnesses chased after him and managed to catch up with him.
A moment later, the man was arrested by the police officers who arrived at the scene.
Nearly 2.5 parts per mille and a positive drug test
The detained 29-year-old behaved aggressively. He failed to follow the officers’ orders and tried to kick them.
A breathalyzer test showed that he had nearly 2.5 parts per mille of alcohol in his breath. Due to his behavior, the officers also conducted a test for intoxicating substances. The result? Amphetamine and methamphetamine were detected.
After the necessary procedures were completed, the 29-year-old was placed in police custody.
The officers secured the evidence and questioned witnesses. On the basis of the evidence collected, the man was charged with unlawful deprivation of liberty, for which he faces a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
The District Prosecutor in Legnica applied for the 29-year-old to be placed in temporary detention. The court will decide the matter.
The children reacted exactly as they should
Police point out that the children’s behavior was of enormous importance in this situation. Their screams immediately drew the adults’ attention; they chased after the man and helped bring about his arrest.
