8-year-old Filip is fighting for his health after a serious quad bike accident. The boy’s family has appealed to people for prayers and help with his treatment and rehabilitation. At Readers’ request, we are sharing their appeal.
The accident occurred on September 23 near Brzeźnik. As we reported earlier, a resident of Bolesławiec was riding a quad bike with his 8-year-old son. While climbing a slope, the vehicle overturned and crushed the boy. The child was airlifted by the Polish Medical Air Rescue helicopter to a hospital in Wrocław.
The family has now provided an update on Filip’s health and started a fundraiser for his further treatment and rehabilitation.
“Our little son is in a very serious neurological condition,” the boy’s mother said.
She explains that Filip suffered numerous contusions and brain injuries, including damage to the brainstem. The boy also sustained extensive fractures of the skull and facial bones.
The boy’s mother:
But they keep telling us that this is not a verdict; he is a child, and his neuroplasticity has remarkable abilities to regenerate and reorganize. We have to give him time—a time that feels like an eternity to us, but is crucial for him as he rebuilds, cell by cell.
The family emphasizes that for now, the most important thing is to wait and see how the situation develops and what the boy’s neurological condition will be.
– The most important thing now is for our little teddy bear to wake up and start breathing on his own without the help of a ventilator – we read in the appeal.
“The hardest fight of our lives is ongoing”
Filip’s mother says that on September 23, her 8-year-old son went on his first quad bike ride with his father. The accident occurred while they were riding up a hill in the forest, near his grandparents’ home in Brzeźnik.
The father, the fundraiser’s organizer reports, managed to jump off the vehicle, but the quad bike overturned onto the boy. The man pulled his son out from under the vehicle and carried him to the road while calling for help.
–Since that moment, the hardest fight of our lives has been underway—the fight for our son, for his health and for his future – Filip’s mother wrote.
Filip is under doctors’ care. His parents are with him every day.
Mother: – We are with him every day, we talk to him, hold his hand and believe that he will come back to us.
The family is preparing for lengthy rehabilitation
The boy’s loved ones do not yet know how long his road to recovery will be or exactly what treatment and rehabilitation he will need.
“However, we know that Filip may face a long and very intensive course of neurological rehabilitation. There may be costs for specialized therapy, rehabilitation stays, physiotherapy, speech therapy, neuropsychological care, medical equipment and everything that will help him regain as much function as possible,” we read in the appeal.
Filip’s mother also says that during a conversation with the attending doctor, she heard that this was a good time to start raising money. As she reports, a month at a rehabilitation clinic may cost around 40,000 zlotys.
“It’s not that we have no savings; we will give our child EVERYTHING!! Everything we have. But believe me, no one is prepared for a situation like this,” the woman wrote.
The family wants to be able to provide Filip with appropriate treatment and rehabilitation as soon as his condition allows.
“As a mother who loves her son and best friend with all her heart, I want only the certainty that when the moment comes when he can be helped, we will be able to do absolutely everything for him,” she emphasized.
“Help us storm heaven”
In her appeal, the boy’s mother asks not only for financial support but also for prayers for Filip.
The family remains in contact with a priest who happened to meet them at the hospital and blessed the boy.
“Help us storm heaven; may God hear us. I beg you, wonderful people—I know you are there, so please do not stop praying,” Filip’s mother appeals.
At the same time, the family stresses that it does not want to publish photos of the boy from the intensive care unit.
“I want everyone to remember him as the always cheerful little guy with a big smile and prominent large front teeth,” his mother writes.
The parents also declare that if the situation develops favorably and the funds raised are not needed or the treatment costs turn out to be lower, they want to account for how the money was used.
“I promise that I will account for everything with you. The money will be given to another child who will be fighting for their health, just as our Filip is fighting today,” the boy’s mother declares.
The family thanks everyone who supports Filip with prayers, kind words and help.
“I thank each and every one of you who is with us—for your prayers, kind words and energy. You are all Filip’s wonderful friends!,” the 8-year-old’s mother concludes her appeal.
