On May 22, 2026, the District Court in Legnica issued a judgment in one of the region’s most high-profile road cases in recent months. 38-year-old Sławomir B. was in the dock, charged with causing an accident involving a motorcyclist in the village of Golanka Dolna.

The man was sentenced to a cumulative term of 5 years and 6 months in prison. In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed a lifetime ban on driving any motor vehicles.

Additional financial sanctions

The judgment also requires him to pay PLN 35,000 in compensation to the injured party. The court also ordered the defendant to make three payments to the Fund for Assistance to Victims and Post-Penitentiary Assistance, totalling PLN 20,000.

The 38-year-old will also have to reimburse the legal representation costs incurred by the auxiliary prosecutor.

He Had No Driving Licence and Broke a Court-Imposed Ban

As established by the prosecution, Sławomir B. did not hold the necessary driving entitlement at the time of the accident. He was also subject to an active court-imposed driving ban, which he ignored.

That was not the end of the irregularities. The car he was driving had registration plates assigned to another vehicle. The car also did not have valid third-party liability insurance.

Controversial Behaviour After the Accident

The driver’s behaviour immediately after the incident caused particular outrage. Witnesses stated that instead of helping the injured motorcyclist, he allegedly gestured and blamed the victim.

He then drove away from the scene. According to witness accounts, while fleeing he nearly hit people who tried to stop him.

He Denied Guilt Until the End

The trial concluded after the Legnica District Prosecutor’s Office filed the indictment. During the proceedings, the defendant did not admit his guilt.

Only at the end of the trial did he apologise to the injured party and express remorse. The court nevertheless found the evidence gathered sufficient to issue a conviction.

Prosecutor’s Office: The Judgment Is Justified

After the ruling was announced, the representative of the prosecution positively assessed the court’s decision. As Liliana Łukasiewicz, press spokesperson for the Legnica Regional Prosecutor’s Office, reported, investigators considered the judgment issued to be justified.

The ruling is not yet final. The parties to the proceedings have the right to file appeals within the time limits provided for by criminal procedure regulations.
