The financing of the Gala of the Future of St. Luke’s Hospital in Bolesławiec continues to raise controversy. So far, the Foundation has not disclosed to the istotne.pl editorial office the full data concerning revenues and expenditure related to the gala, although this information is public. This week, the Voivodeship Administrative Court in Wrocław issued a judgment ordering the Foundation to provide us with a full response – the court ordered the disclosure of information about the gala.

Meanwhile, documents from an informant reached our editorial office, showing the scale of expenditure associated with organizing the event.

Invoice for more than PLN 45,000

The documents in our possession show that a Wrocław company was paid exactly PLN 45,202.50 for bar services. The purchaser of the service was Jolanta Sawczak – but, importantly, in her private capacity, not as the Foundation.

The service included, among other things, supplying alcohol (vodka, rum, gin, whisky and prosecco), bartending services and a complete setup for serving drinks. Even more interesting is a provision in the agreement concluded with the bar services company. It states that the location where the service was to be provided was: I General Secondary School in Bolesławiec – sports hall. This means that, when the agreement was concluded, the parties already knew where alcohol would be served. The Jelenia Góra prosecutor’s office probably did not have this document when it discontinued the proceedings because of the minimal social harm of the act.

That’s not all – a second bar

As we have established, a second, outdoor bar was also operating during the event, set up in front of the building. We now know that it was operated by yet another company, belonging to a person employed at St. Luke’s Hospital. We are currently determining who paid for this second service and what its exact value was. According to our estimates, it may have been about PLN 25,000, meaning that the total cost of alcohol and bar services may have exceeded PLN 70,000.

Letter to the president

On April 16, 2026, we emailed Jolanta Sawczak asking for comment on the matter.

Dear Madam President,
In connection with the editorial office’s findings, please answer the following questions:

  1. The invoice we obtained shows that the bar service worth PLN 45,202.50 was purchased by you as a private individual. Was this expenditure related to the Foundation’s activities, and was it settled in any way (for example, as a donation or reimbursement of expenses)?
  2. Why did the response to the public-information request not state the value of this service, even though – as shown by the documents – it was known to the Foundation?
  3. A second, outdoor bar also operated in front of the building during the event. Who organized it, and who covered the cost of this service and in what amount?
  4. Will the total value of services related to bar operations (inside and outside the facility) be included in the Foundation’s financial statement?

Yours sincerely,
Krzysztof Gwizdała

Who attended the booze gala?

Many local-government officials, civil servants, councilors and heads of uniformed services attended the event. The guest list contained about one hundred names. They included: the principal of the I General Secondary School, Cezary Czernatowicz, the head of the Municipal Police, Kamila Chalewicz-Pudłowska and the Bolesławiec County Police Commander, senior inspector Tomasz Jagielski.

During the event in the sports hall of the I General Secondary School in Bolesławiec, guests were offered drinks with names referring to medical work and hospital tragedies, including “stat!”, “resuscitation”, “oxygen saturation”, “death” and “emergency duty”. The organization of the gala, during which alcohol was served on the premises of a public school, was investigated by the prosecutor’s office, which confirmed a violation of the Act on Upbringing in Sobriety, but refused to initiate an investigation because of the minimal social harm of the act.

Support independent journalism at istotne.pl

In recent months, the istotne.pl editorial office has published stories about matters important to residents: the hospital, county, city, foundations, companies, contracts, public spending and transparency in public life. These are not articles produced in an hour. They involve dozens of documents, public-information requests, analysis of responses, complaints to courts, legal consultations, travel, conversations with people and consistently following up on issues that those in power would most gladly leave unquestioned.

This kind of journalism costs money. And if we are to remain truly independent of the city, county and hospital, we need readers’ support. Only thanks to you can we continue to scrutinize those in power, ask uncomfortable questions and report on matters involving public money and local networks.

That is why we ask for voluntary support for journalistic work: zrzutka.pl/z/niezalezny
