Legnica traffic police patrolling the A4 motorway received a report from the duty officer about an attempted break-in to the fuel tank of a truck in Strupice. The officers immediately went to the scene.
While en route, the officers noticed a pedestrian travelling along the motorway towards Wrocław. The man was unable to explain what he was doing on the A4 at 2:00 a.m., or where he had come from and where he was trying to get to. It was immediately apparent that he was trying to hide something.
The police officers noticed that the suspect’s clothing was soaked with a petroleum-based liquid and, consequently, an intense smell of diesel fuel surrounded the man.
The 28-year-old from the Prochowice municipality was detained and taken to police custody. As it turned out, the suspect had stolen 570 litres of diesel fuel. Moreover, the man had also tried to break into the fuel tank of a DAF vehicle. (At the time, he wanted to steal 1,200 litres of fuel).
The losses caused by the 28-year-old’s criminal activity were estimated at more than PLN 2,000. The man was charged with three offences. He confessed to the crimes. He now faces up to 10 years in prison.
