On Monday, 17 August 2026, new recruits of Voluntary Basic Military Service joined the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment. The following day, a ceremonial assembly was held during which the volunteers received weapons from the regiment commander – one of the most important attributes of a soldier.

The handover of weapons is not only a symbolic moment marking the beginning of a military career. As was emphasized during the ceremony, it also involves responsibility and the trust placed in soldiers beginning their training.

Commander:

By handing you these weapons, we are entrusting you not only with the means to perform your duties, but also expressing our trust in your maturity, abilities and determination.

An intensive period of training lies ahead for the young students of the military profession. It will be an opportunity to acquire the basic skills necessary for service and to prove themselves in new and demanding conditions.

The Homeland Defence Act introduced a new type of military service – voluntary basic military service. This form of military service is intended for all those who have never previously served in the military. It enables them to complete military training and, in the future, join the reserves or enter the professional army.

Until recently, people interested in military service could, for example – apart from studying at a military academy or completing an officers’ or non-commissioned officers’ course – apply for preparatory service. However, this option was abolished by the Homeland Defence Act, which has been in force since 23 April 2022. A new form of active service for volunteers – voluntary basic military service – was introduced in its place. Applying for it is the first step towards being called up to serve in the Polish Armed Forces.
