Police officers identified five people driving vehicles after drinking alcohol during the province-wide “Alcohol and Drugs” operation conducted in Bolesławiec County. Within a single day, officers from the Traffic Department checked nearly 420 drivers of cars and two-wheeled vehicles.

The most serious consequences were faced by four drivers of motor vehicles, who lost their driving licences. Among those detained was one driver who was intoxicated and three drivers who had consumed alcohol. Police officers also detained an intoxicated cyclist.

The first detention took place before 7 a.m. Officers checked a 70-year-old resident of Bolesławiec County who was driving a car with approximately one per mille of alcohol in his system.

Further checks showed that three other drivers had also decided to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. The youngest of them was 23. As police officers emphasize, those detained explained that they had consumed alcohol the previous evening, believing that they would be completely sober by morning. This is another example showing that assessing one’s own sobriety can be misleading.

Around noon, Bolesławiec traffic officers also stopped a 43-year-old cyclist. The test showed that he had more than two per mille of alcohol in his system.

Police remind the public that driving after drinking alcohol carries serious consequences. Car drivers must expect, among other things, the loss of their driving licence, substantial financial penalties and criminal liability. Riding a bicycle while intoxicated is punishable by a PLN 2,500 fine, while riding after consuming alcohol carries a PLN 1,000 fine.

Officers urge anyone with any doubts about their sobriety to refrain from driving. They also remind the public that a free breathalyser is available to everyone at the County Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec. The condition is to reach the headquarters on foot or as a passenger—never as the driver of a vehicle.
