As reported by junior asp. Bartłomiej Sobczyszyn of the District Police Headquarters in Bolesławiec:

On June 17, 2026, in the afternoon, a woman called the emergency number after accidentally locking her vehicle keys inside it. Her two-month-old son was also in the car.

As a result, Bolesławiec police officers were dispatched to the scene. They broke a window in the car and pulled the child out. Thanks to the officers’ quick response, no one was injured.

Keys locked inside the car. What should you do?

If keys are accidentally locked inside a car and a child is inside, it is essential to act quickly and calmly. Here is what to do:

The most important thing is to call for help immediately. Dial the emergency number 112 and clearly describe the situation: explain that a child is inside the locked car and provide your exact location. The dispatcher can immediately send the police, fire service or other emergency services.

If the child is young, do not wait or try to force the car open in an uncontrolled way. In such cases, the emergency services may decide to break a window or use another quick method to access the vehicle’s interior.

It is also worth trying simple, safe solutions at the same time: check whether any of the doors are unlocked or whether the car can be opened using the manufacturer’s app or a spare key, if one is nearby.

If conditions are difficult, such as extreme heat or a lack of ventilation, monitor the child and respond to signs of overheating or distress. In such a situation, do not delay calling the emergency services.

The key rule is this: time is critical, and if there is a risk to life, do not hesitate to call the emergency services and agree to the vehicle being forcibly opened.
