On February 3, 2026, the District Court in Legnica published the first-instance verdict issued in the case of the defendant Mateusz J. The court found J. guilty of the crime with which he was charged and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Moreover, the court ordered, among other things, that the defendant pay partial compensation to the victim for the harm suffered, in the amount of PLN 500,000, as well as a restraining order prohibiting him from coming within 100 meters of the victim and a ban on contacting her—for 15 years.

J. must also pay PLN 50,000 to the Fund for Assistance to Victims and Post-Penitentiary Assistance.

What about the defendant?

Investigators:

At the same time, after publishing the verdict, the District Court in Legnica also issued a decision extending the defendant’s pretrial detention by a further six months, that is, until August 18, 2026.

The prosecutor’s office on the verdict:

The decisions of the District Court in Legnica concerning the sentence and the criminal and compensatory measures were almost entirely consistent with the prosecutor’s earlier motions submitted at the last main hearing, held on January 21, 2026 (...).

It should be noted that the defendant, Mateusz J., consistently denied committing the crime with which he was charged, while maintaining the explanations he had previously given during the investigation and his existing line of defense.

An analysis of the collected evidence and the results of the court proceedings made it possible to conclude that the defendant’s explanations and adopted line of defense were not credible.

What about the verdict?

The verdict is currently not final. The parties to these court proceedings may appeal, and the Court of Appeal in Wrocław will have jurisdiction to hear the appeal.
