Tragedy struck on January 19, before 5:00 p.m., on the A4 motorway toward Germany. Police:

According to the police officers’ preliminary findings, a 69-year-old Ukrainian citizen driving a Renault delivery vehicle failed to adjust his speed and distance to vehicles stopped in a traffic jam leading to the border crossing in Jędrzychowice and hit the back of a heavy-goods vehicle combination.

Under the prosecutor’s supervision, Zgorzelec police officers from the Traffic Division, a forensic technician and an expert in the reconstruction of road accidents worked at the scene.

Unfortunately, the Renault driver died at the scene. The police and prosecutor’s office are determining the causes and circumstances of the tragedy. Officers appeal for prudence and caution on the road.

Police advice

Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. We remind you that, under the applicable regulations, the safe distance between vehicles on expressways—including motorways and express roads—is half the current speed. In addition to the distance required by law, it is worth remembering that in heavy traffic or when braking, the distance should be large enough to allow the vehicle to stop if necessary.

Adjust your speed to the road conditions. Even on motorways, where permitted speeds are high, it is necessary to respond to changing circumstances, such as traffic jams, roadworks and weather conditions.

Stay focused and avoid using your phone and other “distractions.” A second of inattention at high speed can lead to road incidents with tragic consequences.

Listen to traffic announcements. Up-to-date information about incidents, traffic jams and changes to traffic arrangements allows drivers to slow down or change their route early enough.

Watch the electronic signs. On motorways, it is essential to pay attention to electronic road-information boards, which may display messages about traffic jams, speed restrictions, roadworks or accidents. Electronic signage often warns drivers well in advance, allowing them to gradually reduce their speed and prepare for difficulties.

Let’s work together to improve safety on the roads. Careful and predictable driving can prevent many dangerous situations.
