As reported by the Bolesławiec regiment, on January 12, additional volunteers who decided to take on the challenge and begin service as part of Voluntary Basic Military Service reported to the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment.

The uniformed personnel add:

The following day, on January 13, 2026, the newly enlisted soldiers received weapons—the symbol of responsibility and readiness to serve.

From that moment, an intensive period of training began for them, culminating in a ceremonial military oath. The regiment said: “We wish the new soldiers perseverance, determination and safe service.”

The Homeland Defense Act introduced a new type of military service—voluntary basic military service. It is a form of military service intended for all those who have never previously served in the military. It enables them to complete military training and, in the future, join the reserves or enter the professional army.

Until recently, people interested in military service could, for example—apart from studying at a military academy or completing an officer or non-commissioned officer course—apply for preparatory service. However, this last option was abolished by the Homeland Defense Act in force since April 23, 2022. Preparatory service was replaced by a new active-service option for volunteers—voluntary basic military service. Applying for it is the first step toward being called up to serve in the Polish Armed Forces.
