Scandalous theft! 29-year-old cross thief charged! He will also face charges for offending religious feelings

As investigators report, on September 17, 2025, the district prosecutor charged Beniaminowi W., a 29-year-old resident of Legnica, with theft, attempted theft and offending religious feelings. W. had previously been convicted several times of crimes against property. Prosecutor’s Office:

The man had previously attempted to steal property belonging to the Greek Catholic Parish of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Legnica.

This took place on September 4, 2025, when the aforementioned man used a ladder to get onto the roof of the sacristy building, where he attempted to steal copper roof elements worth PLN 10,000. He did not achieve his goal because the building’s alarm went off. The perpetrator caused damage amounting to PLN 2,000.

That was not the end of it. Investigators: – Moreover, on September 9, 2025, while preparing to steal the cross from the temple’s dome, the aforementioned man stole an aluminum ladder worth PLN 1,639. The aforementioned man dismantled it from a van parked in Legnica.

Prosecutor’s Office:

In connection with the theft of the cross, the prosecutor charged the aforementioned man with offending the religious feelings of members of the Greek Catholic Parish of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Legnica on September 13, 2025, in Legnica, at Wrocławska Street, by stealing a cross from the central dome of the Orthodox church, worth PLN 10,000, preceded by damaging the roof of the dome in question by driving twenty construction anchors into its surface, causing losses amounting to PLN 30,000 to the detriment of the aforementioned Greek Catholic parish, as a result of which he publicly insulted the parish church intended for the public performance of religious rites.

The prosecutor determined that, by committing the theft, the aforementioned man offended the religious feelings of other people because, by cutting out the cross, he insulted a place intended for the public performance of religious rites.

Beniamin W. faces up to five years in prison.
