The incident took place last Friday. While off duty, Commander Mariusz Zabłotny, head of the Police Staff Division, noticed the driver of a Volkswagen whose behavior on the road suggested that he might be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. – The driver set off at traffic lights with a significant delay, braked for no reason, repeatedly changed lanes and failed to keep a straight course. At one point, before a pedestrian crossing, he slowed down sharply, then suddenly accelerated and stopped again, causing panic among pedestrians – reports Senior Officer Monika Kaleta from the Press Section of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław.

She adds: – Seeing the danger, the police officer did not hesitate for a moment. He got out of his vehicle, ran up to the car, switched off the engine and prevented the driver from continuing to drive.

Earlier, the commander had informed the duty officer at the local police unit, thanks to which traffic police officers arrived at the scene without delay.

It turned out that the Volkswagen was being driven by a 39-year-old resident of the Kunice municipality. The spokeswoman said:

Although there was no smell of alcohol on him, a drug test confirmed the presence of intoxicating substances in his system. Blood was taken from the man for further testing.

The 39-year-old lost his driving licence and will face court. Driving a vehicle under the influence of drugs is punishable by up to three years in prison.
