On Monday, 14 April this year, a report concerning an act of vandalism at the local cemetery was received by the duty officer at the District Police Headquarters in Lwówek Śląski. – The reporting person notified us that three gravestones had been damaged. District officers were immediately sent to the scene; they confirmed the report and began investigating the matter – explains asp. szt. Monika Kaleta from the Wrocław Provincial Police Headquarters.

While speaking with residents and people visiting the graves of their loved ones, the police determined that for several days a man whose behaviour caused concern had been moving around the cemetery. He was reportedly seen in various parts of the necropolis, and his behaviour was downright irrational.

Spokeswoman: – The officers conducted a thorough search of the cemetery, during which they found in the restroom a man matching the description provided by witnesses.

The 29-year-old resident of the region was detained and taken to a police unit. During the proceedings, he was unable to rationally explain his behaviour, but admitted to damaging the gravestones.

The result? He was charged with desecrating the burial place of the dead, an offence punishable under Article 262 § 1 of the Penal Code by up to two years in prison. Police: – Further activities are currently under way to clarify all the circumstances of the incident and determine whether any other gravestones were also damaged by the perpetrator.
