– On Wednesday morning, October 16, 2024, a traffic disaster occurred in Góra near Głogów, in which the lives and health of at least 23 children being transported by school bus and their attendant, as well as 4 residents of a residential building, which the driver deliberately drove into – prosecutor Liliana Łukasiewicz, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Legnica, reports.
That day, 28-year-old Jakub G. was taking 23 children to one of the primary schools in Góra and to the local kindergarten. An attendant was traveling with them. The spokesperson said: – From the beginning, the driver was traveling at a very high speed, ignoring the administrative restrictions. He talked on the phone while driving. He drove the bus with one hand. Along the route, he rammed a road sign, which shattered the windshield. He did not respond to the children’s and attendant’s screams and requests to stop the vehicle. While overtaking, he hit a car driven by a woman who had taken her child to school shortly beforehand. He drove over speed bumps without slowing down.
The result? Investigators: – He eventually drove the bus into the yard of one of the houses, ramming the entrance gate and two cars. Finally, he hit the wall of a single-family house where 4 people were present.
Fortunately, nothing happened to the children. The driver was arrested. He was not drunk, but was under the influence of marijuana and methamphetamine.
The prosecutor charged Jakub G. with intentionally causing a disaster in land traffic, meaning an act endangering the lives and health of many people, driving a vehicle under the influence of intoxicating substances, and possessing a small quantity of an intoxicating substance. The suspect admitted his guilt and provided extensive explanations. Prosecutor L. Łukasiewicz:
He explained that a higher power had guided his actions.
She added:
Given the content of the suspect’s explanations, it will be necessary to determine whether Jakub G. was legally sane at the time of the offense.
At the investigators’ request, the court temporarily detained the 28-year-old for three months. The extremely irresponsible driver faces up to 10 years in prison.
