The incident took place on 29 July. – A few minutes after midnight, the duty officer at the command centre of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica received a report stating that a driver of an Audi was travelling along the A4 motorway on the Wrocław–Legnica route, and that his driving style indicated that he might be under the influence of alcohol or a similarly acting substance – reports Senior Constable Łukasz Porębski from the Press Section of the Wrocław Provincial Police Headquarters. – Legnica police officers were immediately dispatched to the designated area.

And he adds:

It quickly turned out that the driver of the vehicle identified in the report was travelling across the entire width of the road, creating a real danger for other road users. In addition, one of the witnesses followed the vehicle identified in the report the entire time and kept the officers informed of its current location and further dangerous manoeuvres.

After a few moments, the Audi driver left the A4 near Legnica and stopped in a nearby car park.

Spokesperson:

In this case, it can certainly be said that it was very fortunate that no one was hurt and no tragedy occurred. Ultimately, the 24-year-old arrested by Legnica police officers was tested for alcohol. The reporter’s suspicions proved correct, as the resident of Małopolskie Voivodeship was operating a motor vehicle with 2 per mille of alcohol in his exhaled air.

The drunk driver was arrested; he lost his driving licence and will soon answer for his actions in court.

Officers:

We appeal both to drivers and to bystanders who see an intoxicated person driving a vehicle or trying to get behind the wheel to prevent them from doing so and notify the police. By failing to react to reprehensible behaviour, we give intoxicated people permission to drive vehicles, which may ultimately lead to tragedy.

Let us remember that a citizen’s arrest is a privilege granted to every citizen under Article 243 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. An offender may be arrested both in the act and after a pursuit undertaken immediately after the offence was committed.

However, it must be remembered that this right applies in one of two cases: when there is a fear that the perpetrator may hide or when their identity cannot be established. An offender arrested in this way must be handed over to the police without delay.
