An “American engineer” contacted a woman from Złotoryja via social media at the beginning of 2024. – He talked about his life and what he did. He gradually gained the woman’s trust, convincing her that he was even planning to move to Poland – reports Aspirant Dominika Kwakszys, press officer of the District Police Headquarters in Złotoryja.

The acquaintance continued for about two months. During that time, the “American,” on several occasions citing a difficult situation in his life and the need to pay for a package sent to Poland, asked the woman for money. The spokeswoman: – Believing that she was helping, the 59-year-old made several bank transfers, totaling approximately PLN 25,000. When she realized that she had been defrauded, she notified the police.

Police officers:

To prevent similar situations, we remind you to exercise particular caution when making new acquaintances. This is especially important if requests for financial assistance appear during the correspondence.

They add:

Let us remember that when meeting people online, we can never be certain who we are really corresponding with. Scammers posing as American doctors, soldiers or engineers create a fictional identity from scratch. By describing their lives, they arouse pity and even make people fall in love with them, particularly those who are lonely. After gaining the trust of potential victims, they ruthlessly extort money.

Let’s be cautious and sensible! Let’s not be deceived!
