Before seven in the morning, officers confirmed the report and secured the coffin. It turned out that there was no one inside it, and no one had reported the theft of property in the form of a coffin.
Two days later, a group of men came to the police station in Wałbrzych, wanting to collect the coffin. It turned out that they were the ones who had placed it in the square.
How did the coffin end up in the street?
After Poland lost a football match and they had consumed a considerable amount of alcohol, the group of men decided to walk around the city. However, it was not an ordinary walk. The men took a coffin with them. A surveillance camera recorded the unusual sight.
When one of the men finally fell asleep, the rest of his friends decided, as a joke, to leave the coffin next to him. The sleeping man remained alone with the coffin.
At one point, the “resting” man decided to make use of the coffin, lay down inside it, and continued his nap. When it began to rain in the early morning, he got out of the coffin and fled from the elements, leaving the wooden coffin alone in the square.
Whom did the coffin belong to, and what was it supposed to symbolize?
Although the entire situation had its comical aspects, it should be emphasized that the coffin did not belong to any of the men. Its owner, a local entrepreneur and the employer of one of the participants, showed understanding when he learned about the incident and decided not to report a possible crime, considering the whole situation a minor incident resulting from excessive alcohol consumption and frustration after the footballers’ defeat. Once the formalities are completed, the coffin will be returned to its owner, while the group of young men were instructed about responsible behavior.
In a conversation with the officers, one of the men stated that the coffin left in the square could be an expressive symbol of the team’s condition after losing a football match.
