Officers from the Police Station in Leśna stopped a Renault car for a road check several days ago in Świeradów-Zdrój. – When the officers got out of the vehicle to identify the people travelling in it, the driver suddenly accelerated and drove away – reports asp. szt. Justyna Bujakiewicz-Rodzeń, press officer for the Lubań District Police Headquarters.

She adds: – The officers began a pursuit. Several dozen metres farther on, the driver attempted to turn around. The officers blocked his way and, while observing safety precautions, began to approach the vehicle. The driver then pressed the key and locked the doors.

The police officers ordered the man to open the vehicle, but he did not respond, so they used a service baton to smash the window in the car door. They then pulled the man and the passenger out.

It turned out that the car was being driven by a 42-year-old resident of Lwówek County, while the passenger was his peer from Lubań County. The spokeswoman said: – After opening the cabin, the officers found another man inside, a 29-year-old resident of Świeradów-Zdrój.

The officers said:

One of the reasons the 42-year-old fled was that the car he was driving had been stolen in Germany. The driver was tested for alcohol in his breath – he was sober, but a saliva test for drugs was positive. The man was detained and taken to a police unit. The fugitive's blood was collected for further tests, and he spent the night in police custody.

The vehicle's passengers were released after the necessary procedures were completed.

The suspect was charged with failing to stop for a road check, an offence punishable by up to 5 years in prison. If the test results show that he drove the car under the influence of drugs, the charge will be expanded to include another offence. Information about the recovered car was sent to the German police for further verification. Activities in the case are still ongoing.
