– At around 3 a.m., the duty officer at the District Police Headquarters in Złotoryja received a report from a driver who was travelling along the A4 motorway towards Wrocław – reports Junior Aspirant Dominika Kwakszys of the Złotoryja police. – Between the Lubiatów and Złotoryja junctions, the man stopped the driver of a delivery vehicle who was travelling the wrong way along the motorway.

A police patrol established that at one point the reporting driver noticed a car approaching from the opposite direction in the same lane. He had absolutely not expected to encounter a vehicle travelling the wrong way on a high-speed road. He knew that such behaviour could lead to a very dangerous situation, so he reacted. He safely stopped his car while signalling his manoeuvre to other drivers and in this way blocked the road for the approaching Ford. He ran up to the driver, who had stopped, and prevented him from continuing by removing the keys from the ignition.

Spokeswoman: – The police tested the 31-year-old for alcohol in his exhaled breath. The device showed over 3‰. The man was arrested and placed in police custody, while the car was secured by a roadside assistance service.

Further police findings showed that the man lived in Złotoryja County and that the car he was travelling in did not belong to him. Taking advantage of the fact that the owner had left the keys inside, the 31-year-old stole the car and drove it towards Złotoryja. On the way back, he took a wrong turn and entered the motorway.

Press officer:

The evidence gathered in the case allowed the man to be charged with two offences: taking an unsecured vehicle for the purpose of short-term use, and causing an immediate danger of a disaster in land traffic by driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated and entering the lane of the A4 motorway intended for vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.

At the request of the prosecution and police, the court remanded the 31-year-old in temporary custody for two months. The man faces up to eight years in prison.
