The Wrocław branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways reports: – We are approaching the completion of preparatory work related to the planned expansion of the Lower Silesian section of the A4 motorway between Legnica and Wrocław.

Road officials:

The Lower Silesian section of the A4 motorway, without emergency lanes and with substandard interchanges, is characterized by very heavy traffic. Unfortunately, this leads to traffic congestion, road incidents and collisions. The need to expand the A4 motorway or seek alternative solutions has been part of the public debate for many years. Drivers complain, while residents and businesses are frustrated by traffic disruptions. Accidents and traffic jams are practically a weekly occurrence on this road, particularly on the section between Legnica and Wrocław.

What has been done?

The road administrator: – In 2021, we signed an agreement to prepare a Technical-Economic-Environmental Study with elements of a program concept and a Functional and Utility Program, together with obtaining an environmental decision, for the construction/expansion of the A4 motorway from Legnica Południe (with an interchange) to Wrocław Wschód (without an interchange)/Stary Śleszów interchange (with an interchange), and the construction of the S5 expressway between Sobótka and Bolków. Due to the mutual impact of the S5 and A4 roads, the documentation is being prepared simultaneously for the approximately 80-kilometer A4 section from the Legnica Południe interchange to the Wrocław Wschód/Stary Śleszów interchange, and for the approximately 50-kilometer Bolków–Sobótka section of the S5 expressway.

The recommended route option for the project between Legnica and Wrocław is expected to be known soon.

What are the objectives of the project?

The Wrocław branch of GDDKiA: – The construction/reconstruction of the A4 motorway between Legnica and Wrocław requires decisive action to improve driver safety. The most important objective of the entire project is the expansion/construction of a two-carriageway, three-lane A4 motorway with an emergency lane. An important issue is improving the current road safety conditions on the A4 motorway, taking over and distributing heavy transit traffic from lower-class roads, which will likely entail the need to adapt the road network, relieve the existing road network and improve living conditions for residents in the region.

It also adds: – The expansion of the motorway will improve the safety of road users and better connect the existing road infrastructure, including the Wrocław metropolitan area with adjacent economic zones and manufacturing plants.
