On the night of September 22–23, a fatal accident occurred on the A4 motorway in Bolesławiec County. KPP: – The intoxicated 24-year-old, driving a passenger car, struck a tow truck-type vehicle traveling in front of him. The passenger in the car died at the scene.

It adds: – The test showed that the resident of Zgorzelec County got behind the wheel with nearly 2.5 per mille of alcohol in his system.

The perpetrator was detained by Bolesławiec police officers and, after sobering up, was brought before the prosecutor’s office and the court. The latter remanded him in custody for three months.

Police:

The 24-year-old will be held responsible for causing a fatal accident while intoxicated. He faces a sentence of between 2 and 12 years in prison.

It adds:

Despite numerous appeals and severe penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol, young people continue to disregard regulations and the safety of road users. As the situation on the A4 last weekend shows, alcohol is often the cause of tragic incidents in which people die.

The penalty for causing a fatal accident under the influence of alcohol may be as high as 12 years in prison. In such a case, the court must also impose a ban on driving motor vehicles, potentially for life. The maximum penalties for drunk drivers who cause accidents are half again as high as those facing sober drivers.

Bolesławiec police officers appeal for caution behind the wheel and urge people to react when they see someone who has been drinking attempting to drive.

It also adds:

We remind you that driving after consuming alcohol or while intoxicated is strictly prohibited.
