This refers to the yellow-staining mushroom, which can also be found in green areas in Bolesławiec. We came across one in one of Bolesławiec’s parks. The yellow-staining mushroom is a poisonous variety of this tasty fungus. Eating it can cause severe digestive problems, nausea and vomiting.
How can you identify the poisonous yellow-staining mushroom?
The yellow-staining mushroom looks very similar to edible mushrooms. Like other mushrooms, it is white, while the color of the gills (hymenophore) in young specimens is pinkish-white and becomes increasingly darker over time. Yellow-staining mushrooms grow from May to October. They can be found in deciduous and coniferous forests, along roads, in roadside thickets, parks, gardens and meadows.
There are, however, two features that distinguish it from other edible species:
- When damaged (especially at the base of the stem), the yellow-staining mushroom turns yellow. A yellow color may also appear after damage to other parts of the mushroom.
- The yellow-staining mushroom has an unpleasant, chemical smell.
