– A fatal road accident occurred on August 30 on the road between Węgliniec and Zielonka – reports Junior Asp. Tomasz Nowak from the Press Section of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław. – According to findings by officers from the Police Station in Pieńsk and the Zgorzelec police headquarters, a 37-year-old resident of Zgorzelec County, driving a Volkswagen, deliberately violated road safety rules.
While overtaking the cyclist, the driver slowed down, thereby enabling the 16-year-old passenger to grab the 17-year-old cyclist by the hand and pull her. The driver then began to accelerate, causing the teenager to fall, hit her head on the road and suffer serious injuries.
The driver and passenger left the scene without providing assistance to the injured woman.
The 37-year-old driver was charged, and the court then remanded him in temporary custody for three months.
The VW driver now faces up to twelve years in prison. The passenger will answer for his actions before a family court.
