Around 70 people came to the market square to express their opposition to the lawlessness of PiS. The abortion ban threatens the lives and health of Polish mothers and of women who wish to carry their pregnancies to term in Poland.
The protest was led by Kinga Gęsicka-Biały, one of the representatives of the Bolesławiec Women’s Strike.
“We must stand together as a society,” Kinga said while speaking with the women during the gathering. “We will make leaflets with the numbers for Abortion Without Borders. We will try to smuggle them into the obstetrics ward in Bolesławiec. Remember that performing your own abortion is not a crime,” Kinga explained.
The All-Poland Women’s Strike speaks directly about the situation of women in Poland and the reason for the protests:
Poland is not a safe place on Earth. Doctors do not treat us. They do not perform abortions, even if this means breaking the law. We call this reducing the situation to zero. Although the law has been drastically tightened, it permits termination of pregnancy in three cases, including when the life or health of the pregnant person is at risk—doctors allow none of them. Contrary to medical indications, professional ethics and the law, they enforce a total abortion ban. In this way, on May 24, they caused the death of Dorota Lalik at a hospital in Nowy Targ. She was another victim of the regime—and of doctors’ cynicism.
