The opposition to what happened several days ago in Bolesławiec’s market square is decisive. Despite this, Mayor Piotr Roman is not responding—he is not commenting on the matter and is taking no action, as if the issue did not concern him.

Meanwhile, the portal and social media are buzzing. People are furious. Users are not mincing their words:

“I don’t recognize this city anymore—shame.”

“Bigots and crackpots can be found in every city. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this (...).”

“A disgrace for our city. Does Mr. Chudyba have power over the mayor? Something terrible is happening.”

“It is a scandal to publicly flaunt any faith. Don’t poison others with your way of thinking.”

“It’s not worth talking about. A dirty political game, that’s all.”

The gathering in question was described in two articles on istotne.pl:

Among those who usually stand by the banner showing a torn and bloody fetus (as this was not the first such action) are Dr. Janusz Chudyba and his wife. A former biology teacher from I Liceum Ogólnokształcące is almost always present, and a former PE teacher from the same school is also often there.

People are asking directly: who really runs the city, and why is no one taking responsibility for the escalation of emotions?

For now, the mayor’s only response is… silence.

We sent the following email to the mayor (to the email address of his spokesperson):

Dear Mr. Mayor,

In connection with the numerous expressions of outrage from Bolesławiec residents concerning the gathering in the city center on May 3, as well as the results of the poll conducted on istotne.pl (72.29% of voters support dissolving it), we ask you to answer the following questions:

  1. Why did the city authorities decide not to dissolve the gathering, despite the clear opposition of residents and convictions handed down against organizers of previous similar gatherings?
  2. Does the lack of a response mean tacit approval of the organizers’ actions and the content publicly displayed with torn and bloody fetuses?
  3. Was the gathering monitored by city services? If so, by whom? Were any assessments made regarding a threat to public order?
  4. In your opinion, are the slogans and message presented during the gathering consistent with the values represented by the Bolesławiec authorities?

Please respond to the above issues.

Yours sincerely,

Krzysztof Gwizdała

We received the following general response from the spokesperson, without a quotation from Bolesławiec Mayor Piotr Roman:

In Poland, the right to organize and participate in public assemblies is protected by the Constitution of the Republic of Poland and the Act of July 24, 2015—the Assemblies Act. Under these provisions, public assemblies are the primary means by which citizens express their views and opinions. City authorities may dissolve an assembly only in certain, strictly legally defined situations, mainly involving violations of public order or safety. They may not do so merely because they dislike the content, slogans, or values being presented. The gathering on May 3, 2025, was monitored by officials of the Bolesławiec City Office.

A decision to dissolve an assembly must be based on legal provisions and be proportionate to the situation. Mere dissatisfaction with the content presented during an assembly is not grounds for dissolving it.
