– On Saturday, before 10:00 p.m., the duty officer of the Police Station in Bogatynia was notified of a road collision that had occurred on one of the city’s streets. The perpetrator abandoned the vehicle several hundred metres away and fled. Due to the danger it posed to road safety, the Opel was secured in the police car park – reports Police Commissioner Agnieszka Goguł, press officer for the District Police Commander in Zgorzelec.
She adds:
When the police officers investigating the circumstances of the incident tried to reach the Opel’s owner, its current user came to the police station himself and reported the car’s short-term use. The man smelled of alcohol; as it turned out, he was intoxicated, and his account of events was inconsistent.
The actions taken in the case convinced the officers that no vehicle theft had taken place. It emerged that the 20-year-old had been drinking alcohol with friends. He then got into the aforementioned Opel and… drove into a tree.
That was not the end of it. While the vehicle was being towed, the 20-year-old hit a Hyundai. It was this collision that the police were notified about before 10:00 p.m.
