On Monday, 9 January, Border Guard officers from the Zgorzelec outpost selected a passenger car with Czech registration plates for inspection on the A4 motorway. The car was driven by a 26-year-old Georgian citizen, while its passengers were four Turkish citizens.
– During a conversation with the officers, the Georgian citizen admitted that, seeking financial gain, he had picked up four Turkish citizens from an agreed location in Kraków and was supposed to take them to Germany – explains Major SG Joanna Konieczniak, press spokesperson for the Nadodrzański Border Guard Unit. – During the inspection of his documents, the officers established that the Georgian citizen was staying illegally in Poland.
She adds: – The Turkish citizens, meanwhile, explained that they had entered the Schengen Area by plane from Turkey to Serbia, and then travelled in various vehicles through Hungary and Slovakia to Poland.
Further proceedings involving the detained foreign nationals and an interpreter are currently under way. The Georgian citizen faces up to three years in prison for aiding an unlawful crossing of the state border. Major J. Konieczniak:
The further consequence will be his expulsion from Poland and the entry of his details into the Schengen Information System to refuse him entry to Poland and the other countries in the Schengen Area.
