The past weekend brought several interventions by the Border Guard at airports in Poznań and Wrocław. In two cases, the reason was passengers’ statements about a bomb in their luggage. Each time, the procedures carried out ruled out any danger, but the consequences for the travelers were real.
The first incident occurred on Friday evening, August 14, in the arrivals hall of Poznań-Ławica Airport. The services were alerted after a backpack was left unattended.
A specialist bomb-disposal team was sent to the scene. Border Guard officers conducted a detailed analysis of the luggage. No threat was detected, and the abandoned backpack was deemed safe.
After the intervention ended, a 31-year-old woman came forward to collect the luggage. She was issued a fine for leaving the backpack unattended.
“There is a bomb in the suitcase”
The situation looked much more serious the following day. On Saturday, August 15, officers from the Border Guard’s Special Intervention Team at Poznań airport received information about a passenger who, while checking in his luggage, told the staff that there was a bomb in his suitcase.
The 27-year-old Polish man was due to fly to Turkey. Officers responsible for bomb-disposal operations were immediately sent to the scene.
The procedures carried out revealed no dangerous object. The luggage was checked and deemed safe.
The man later explained to the officers that his words had been only a joke. However, that “joke” had specific consequences—he was fined, and by decision of the aircraft captain, he was removed from the passenger list.
A similar situation in Wrocław
Another alarm occurred on Sunday, August 16, at Wrocław airport. Border Guard officers were informed by a staff member about a bomb threat.
This time too, it concerned a passenger flying to Turkey. The 29-year-old Polish citizen reported that there was a bomb in his luggage.
The Border Guard officers conducted bomb-disposal and pyrotechnic reconnaissance. No threat was detected, and the luggage was deemed safe.
The consequences were immediate in this case as well. The man was fined, and by decision of the aircraft captain, he was removed from the passenger list.
Border Guard warns travelers
As the services emphasize, there is no room at an airport for jokes about bombs or other dangerous objects. Leaving luggage unattended can also trigger security procedures and require the involvement of specialist services.
Such situations can disrupt airport operations, delay flights and require detailed procedures by officers responsible for security.
In the incidents described, the threat was ruled out, but for the two passengers, the journey to Turkey ended before they even boarded.
