The first detention took place on September 16 in Zgorzelec County. Officers from the Border Guard Post in Zgorzelec, working together with police officers from Jelenia Góra, stopped a Kia ProCeed for inspection.
The car was driven by a 48-year-old resident of Dzierżoniów County. During the inspection, officers established that the vehicle had previously been stolen in Germany. The Kia was valued at approximately PLN 130,000.
Suspects in car thefts
The 48-year-old was detained on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle. Investigators also determined that the man had allegedly acted jointly and in agreement with a 51-year-old resident of Warsaw. The latter was also detained.
What is more, German police suspected both men of involvement in the theft of another car in Germany.
An electronic device used to steal vehicles was secured during the operation.
The court ordered two months of pre-trial detention for one of the detainees. The other man was placed under police supervision and banned from leaving the country.
Stolen in Germany Nissan detained in Świecko
The next detention took place on September 23 during a temporary border inspection in Świecko. Officers from the Border Guard Post in Słubice directed a Nissan entering Poland for inspection.
A 58-year-old German citizen was behind the wheel. During the inspection, it turned out that he did not have a driving licence. The man was also unable to explain how he had come into possession of the car.
The officers grew suspicious that the Nissan might be stolen. In addition, they found a specially made key in the vehicle's ignition, which had been used to start it.
A check of the car in the available systems confirmed the suspicions. The Nissan had been stolen in Germany and was valued at approximately PLN 50,000.
The 58-year-old was handed over to police officers from Słubice, who are conducting further proceedings in the case.
21 stolen vehicles since the beginning of the year
Since the beginning of 2026, officers of the Nadodrzański Border Guard Unit have detained 21 vehicles stolen in the territory of European Union countries.
The total value of the recovered cars exceeded PLN 2 million.
