The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 3, in the village of Okmiany. At around 5:00 a.m., the woman entered a closed, guarded railway crossing and was struck by a PKP Intercity train running from Zgorzelec to Warszawa Wschodnia.

The victim suffered very serious injuries and died at the scene.

The investigation into the fatal collision involving a pedestrian at the railway crossing is being conducted by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Złotoryja. Yesterday, both prosecutors and police officers, as well as a road traffic expert, were at the scene of the tragedy.

What have the preliminary findings shown? Investigators have a surveillance recording showing that the warning lights were on and the barriers were lowered at the time of the incident. Moreover, photographs also show the woman passing under the barriers and entering the closed railway crossing.

The driver of the Intercity company’s train was sober. It is worth emphasizing that the trains of that company do not stop at this location, unlike those operated by Koleje Dolnośląskie. That is why the train was traveling at high speed.

Who was the woman who died? This has not yet been established with absolute certainty. According to investigators, she was most likely from another part of Poland and was staying in Lower Silesia. (Nothing indicates that she was a local resident.)

The prosecutor’s office is examining the circumstances of the incident. So far, no irregularities on the part of the train driver have been found, but the proceedings are ongoing.
