The incident occurred overnight from Wednesday to Thursday at the 113th kilometre of the A4 motorway. A tanker truck had broken down there and stopped in the right lane. The 24jgora.pl service reported:
A police patrol was dispatched to the damaged vehicle to secure the scene. A moment later, the driver of a bus crashed into the stationary police car with tremendous force. There were not even any skid marks at the scene, so the collision occurred at at least motorway speed. The force of the impact pushed the police car underneath the tanker.

And adds:
Officers were trapped inside the crushed police vehicle. Firefighters and a medical rescue team were immediately dispatched to the scene. One of the police officers got out of the wrecked vehicle under his own power and was taken to hospital. Specialist equipment was needed to free the other officer. Part of the bodywork had to be cut away so that the officer could be pulled out. Unfortunately, his condition required immediate transport to hospital because of the risk of a spinal injury. The police officer lost feeling in his legs.
The police and the prosecutor's office are investigating the case.
