The fire was noticed just before 3 a.m. in one of the social housing units in the single-storey barracks on Osiedle Fabryczna Street in Lubań. When the fire was noticed, the neighbors raised the alarm and began banging on the heavily smoke-filled apartment, but the door was locked. The voice of one of the neighbors could still be heard from inside; in harsh words, he told those banging on the door to go away. After a moment, the voice fell silent and hell broke loose (…).
When the firefighters arrived, the fire was already well developed. One of the brothers was evacuated, but resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. A doctor pronounced him dead.

The men who died in the fire were brothers aged around 60 who had been evicted from the apartment they occupied and had moved into the social housing unit just a week earlier.
The prosecutor’s office and police are investigating the circumstances and causes of the tragedy.
