Update 11:48
Bolesławiec police on the shot moose:
We received information about the carcass of a moose being found in a fire-protection reservoir. A gunshot wound was located around the neck. Activities are under way concerning Article 181 § 3 of the Criminal Code, and we are establishing the circumstances of the incident.
The poacher faces between three months and as much as five years in prison.
Let us recall. On September 8, employees of Nadleśnictwo Bolesławiec received information about a dead moose.
The foresters’ first thought was that the moose had been ill and might have died as a result of the illness. But as soon as the animal was pulled from the water, it became clear that the cause of its death was entirely different. The animal had been shot.
As Barbara Zawadzka, the press spokesperson for Nadleśnictwo Bolesławiec, explained to us yesterday, moose are game animals, but a moratorium applies to them; they are protected year-round. It is forbidden to hunt moose, and killing one is a crime. (Fortunately, poaching is not common in our forests. As forest district manager Arkadiusz Sudoł told us, the last case of this kind occurred several years ago).
And as we explained in yesterday’s article A poacher killed a moose! The first such incident in years. Police are investigating the case, it was not poachers who removed the animal’s head. The decapitation was necessary because that is simply what the procedures require. The animal’s remaining body will decompose naturally.
It is not known yet who committed this heartless and cruel crime. The case is being investigated by Bolesławiec police. We will return to the subject.
