Jeleniogórscy criminal investigators arrested a 72-year-old resident of Ostrów Wielkopolski suspected of fraud and attempted fraud. – The man was arrested in cooperation with employees of one of the banks on August 17 this year in Jelenia Góra – explains Deputy Inspector Edyta Bagrowska, press officer of the local Municipal Police Headquarters. – As officers established, the 72-year-old, acting in agreement with other people, collected 20,000 zlotys that day from an 85-year-old resident of Karkonosze County. She had thrown the money from her balcony after receiving a call from a fake police officer.
What is more, the scammers were so ruthless that they persuaded the manipulated senior to… take out a loan of 34,000 zlotys. The spokeswoman said: – The cash was not handed over, however, because of the arrest.
She added: – In the suspect’s car, officers found the 20,000 zlotys obtained through fraud and two mobile phones.
Investigators established that the man collected cash defrauded from victims by posing as a police officer. As he explained, each time he collected an envelope containing 10,000–20,000 zlotys and then transported the cash abroad. It was initially established that the man had defrauded at least four people of 117,000 zlotys. It cannot be ruled out that there are many more victims.
The officers are currently clarifying all the circumstances of the case in detail. The court remanded the scammer in temporary custody for three months. The man faces up to eight years in prison.
