On 21 August, at approximately 11:40 a.m., police officers in a patrol car equipped with a video recorder decided to stop a Mercedes vehicle for a roadside inspection on Konstytucji 3 Maja Street in Jelenia Góra. The reason? – The driver was travelling at as much as 124 km/h on a section of road where the speed limit was 80 km/h! – explains junior aspirant Krzysztof Marcjan from the Press Section of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław. – Immediately after taking the measurement, the officers signalled for him to stop. The driver pulled over, but when the police officers were approaching the vehicle, he suddenly set off and began fleeing through the city's busy streets.
The officers began the pursuit. The spokesperson said: – While fleeing from the inspection, the driver endangered other road users, drove at high speed, ignored all traffic regulations and failed to obey traffic lights.
He added: – In an attempt to avoid arrest, the man hit a police patrol car and then, continuing on, caused a collision at the intersection of Jana Pawła II Street and Kiepury Street in Jelenia Góra with a Subaru driven by a 55-year-old woman from Jelenia Góra.
The road pirate drove on for a short distance and then began fleeing on foot. It did not help much. He was detained.
The driver turned out to be a 52-year-old resident of Karkonosze County. He was not drunk, but it emerged that he had lost his driving licence the day before for... exceeding the speed limit in a built-up area by more than 50 km/h.
The irresponsible man now faces a sentence of between three months and as many as five years in prison.
