Police officers:

We warn people selling on online portals OLX.pl and Vinted. Fraudsters, claiming that they have received payment for the listed item, send sellers links to fake online banking websites. By logging in to these fake websites, we lose access to our account.

On July 26, a woman reported to the District Police Headquarters in Lwówek Śląski that her daughter had posted an online advertisement offering books for sale. – Shortly afterward, someone interested in buying the items contacted her – reports Senior Sergeant Olga Łukaszewicz, press officer for the Lwówek KPP.

The victim received a link via a private message. When she clicked it, information appeared about where the parcel should be sent. The spokesperson said: – The next step was to select the icon of the bank where she held an account. On a website deceptively resembling the bank’s website, she was asked to enter her login, online banking password and the verification code she had received by SMS. After completing all the steps as instructed, the woman became concerned about how long the transaction was taking.

When she later visited her bank’s website, she realized that more than PLN 20,000 had disappeared from her account—without her knowledge.

The officers warn:

When selling online, you too can become a victim of fraudsters. Do not click on payment links sent in messages, and read authorization SMS messages carefully. If we unfortunately become victims of a crime, we should immediately contact our bank by phone to block access to the account or ATM card.
