On Wednesday, May 12, police detained a man who was stealing copper elements from the roof of a historic wayside chapel. Officers received a report that a man was loitering near the building. A patrol immediately went to the scene. The suspect was using a chisel to tear sheets of metal from the roof of the chapel beside the church. Officers caught him in the act.
The perpetrator turned out to be a 41-year-old resident of Bolesławiec. Police found a bag containing a fragment of sheet metal previously torn off and tools on him.
Renovation of the 18th-century chapel was completed on May 11 this year. Its ceremonial opening was planned for May 17. The losses were estimated at at least PLN 500.
The 41-year-old now faces up to five years in prison.
