An investigation is underway into the tragic fire that occurred on the night of February 12–13 on Żwirki i Wigury Street in Bolesławiec. An expert ruled out the involvement of third parties; the fire in the apartment was either accidentally started or caused by a short circuit in the electrical system.

It is worth noting that the man’s apartment was completely cluttered. Firefighters carried as many as three gas cylinders out of the premises. Therefore, according to investigators, the hypothesis of an accidentally started fire appears most likely. An autopsy of the deceased will be held on Monday, February 15.

Let us recall. The fire broke out on Friday, February 12. Before 11 p.m., a fire appeared in an apartment in the building at 3 Żwirki i Wigury Street. Firefighters managed to reach the burning attic. One person was injured. The man was in the bathroom of the apartment. He was unconscious.

He was given medical assistance in an ambulance for several dozen minutes. Unfortunately, without success—the injured man died.

Firefighters from the Bolesławiec District Headquarters of the State Fire Service about the incident:

[...] at approximately 11:00 p.m., the Command Post of the District Commander of the State Fire Service in Bolesławiec received a report of a fire in an attic apartment on Żwirki i Wigury Street. The dispatcher immediately deployed three crews from the Bolesławiec Rescue and Firefighting Unit, as well as volunteer fire departments from Nowogrodziec, Trzebień, Ocice and Brzeźnik.

When the first crews arrived at the fire, firefighters encountered very heavy smoke on the street. Extremely dense smoke was coming from a third-floor apartment window. Firefighters wearing respiratory protection equipment entered the building with a hose line, directing a stream of water into the apartment and through the window from an aerial ladder.

Residents were evacuated from the apartments in the building affected by the fire and from the neighboring building, into which smoke was spreading—a total of 22 people. During firefighting operations, firefighters began searching the apartment, where they found an unconscious man. He was immediately evacuated outside the building and handed over to the emergency medical team. After approximately 40 minutes of resuscitation, the emergency medical team reported that the injured man had died.

They added:

Part of the roof and wooden ceilings were dismantled to reach the remaining sources of fire. Firefighting operations were hampered by very heavy smoke, the high temperature in the apartment and the low air temperature of -9ºC. Three 11-kilogram gas cylinders, including one scorched cylinder, were removed from the apartment.

After five hours of operations, the volunteer fire crews were replaced—additional units from Warta Bolesławiecka and Różyniec were deployed. At the same time, after midnight, a Bolesławiec Rescue and Firefighting Unit crew and volunteer fire crews in Zebrzydowa, Czerna and Nowogrodziec were conducting firefighting operations in Zebrzydowa, where soot caught fire in the chimney flue of a detached residential building.
