The incident occurred at the end of last week. Asp. szt. Monika Kaleta of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław said:

Officers from the Road Traffic Department of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra detained a 37-year-old man suspected of driving while intoxicated and causing a road collision.

The duty officer at the Municipal Police Headquarters in Jelenia Góra received a report that a car had caught fire in the city after leaving the road and hitting a tree. At the scene, officers found the 37-year-old driver standing beside the burning vehicle. Witnesses to the incident had pulled him out of the car.

The spokesperson said:

Officers established that the driver, travelling at high speed as he left the forest between Jagniątków and Michałowice, lost control of the vehicle, hit an embankment, then struck two pedestrians who were walking on the correct side of the road, scraped against a tree and hit another one head-on, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

Fortunately, the pedestrians suffered no serious injuries. The perpetrator is a 37-year-old resident of Jelenia Góra County. The man was completely drunk; an alcohol test showed 2.5 per mille in his system. He now faces up to two years in prison.
