Every day during the holiday period, on a special website a map will be presented showing the number of fatal road accidents during the last 24 hours and since the start of the holiday period. The ongoing updates, including the visualisation of the data, are intended to draw attention to the scale of the tragedies occurring on Polish roads, encourage road users to reflect, and encourage the media to discuss road safety.

This year, the map’s new functionality is the ability to obtain additional information about an incident, namely its type and the number of fatalities broken down by road-user category.

It should be borne in mind that behind every point marked on this map lies a human tragedy. Every failure to comply with the regulations, even one that may appear trivial, including excessive speed, recklessness, and disregarding drowsiness or fatigue, can cause a tragedy on the road.

The Road Accident Map of Fatalities – Holiday Period 2020 will be displayed every day during the holiday period on screens operated by Screen Network throughout the country, based on current data provided directly by the Road Traffic Bureau of the Police Headquarters.

  • All accidents [235],
  • Last 24 hours [4],
  • Since the start of the holiday period [198],
  • Road accidents in which a person died within 30 days [33].

(Editor's note: The map above also includes the fatal collision involving a man in Bolesławiec. This tragic collision occurred on 17 July, near the viaduct).

Below, we draw attention to simple yet extremely important road-safety rules:

  • Before setting off, check the vehicle’s technical condition, especially the tyres, lighting and levels of operating fluids,
  • Observe road-traffic regulations, particularly regarding compliance with permitted speed limits, sobriety, the use of seat belts and the proper transportation of children in vehicles,
  • Adjust your speed to the weather and road conditions and to your abilities,
  • Always slow down before pedestrian crossings, public-transport stops and intersections,
  • Do not overtake or pass other vehicles near pedestrian crossings or stops, or on the crossings themselves,
  • Signal your manoeuvres on the road sufficiently far in advance and in a way that makes them visible to other road users,
  • Keep telephone conversations to a minimum, and use a hands-free kit when necessary. A telephone conversation, even using permitted devices, distracts the driver,
  • Mandatory breaks should be taken during journeys lasting several hours.
