Border guards from a Polish-German patrol received information from German services that a man was standing on the railway bridge in Zgorzelec and was probably planning either to jump from it or throw himself under an approaching train.
– The officers immediately went to the indicated location. As they reported, upon arriving they noticed a man in the middle of the bridge and headed toward him – reports Maj. Joanna KonieczniakJoanna Konieczniak, press spokesperson for the Nadodrzański Border Guard Unit. – Seeing the uniformed officers, the man began shouting that they should not approach him, and then started walking toward the bridge barrier
The officers failed to persuade the man to leave the bridge. The spokesperson said: – Seeing a train approaching from Germany and the danger associated with it, they swiftly overpowered the 51-year-old. The officers’ decisive action prevented a tragedy.
The man was taken to hospital.
