If we have a car with keyless access, we should be fully aware of the methods used by perpetrators who, using information they can read from the proximity key, are able to start our car.

– The term “relay attack” comes from the fact that the device used by thieves often resembles a suitcase. In such a situation, thieves count on the driver having left the key in a place where its signal can easily be detected, intercepted and amplified near the car so that they can unlock and start it – explains Superintendent Kamil Rynkiewicz from the Press Team of the Lower Silesian Provincial Police Headquarters in Wrocław. – To minimize the risk of such an operation succeeding, the proximity key should be properly secured.

How can this be done?

One option is to obtain suitable packaging for the item, designed to suppress the signal, which will make it more difficult for thieves to intercept. It can also be placed in a metal box or wrapped in aluminum foil.

The spokesperson says: – While at home, it is worth keeping the proximity key as far as possible from the building’s exterior walls, especially the front wall adjacent to a publicly accessible area. In practical terms, while at home, you should not leave the “key” near the entrance, in the hallway, on a windowsill or in rooms next to the wall facing the street.

Police:

We appeal to owners of vehicles with keyless systems to properly secure the proximity key to their car.
