On 21 May, the Lubań District Prosecutor’s Office submitted a successful motion to the local District Court for the pre-trial detention of Marcin K., who was charged with numerous shoplifting offenses, as well as exposing other people to tuberculosis infection.

Prosecutor Tomasz Czułowski, press spokesperson for the Jelenia Góra District Prosecutor’s Office:

From September to December 2019, as well as from February to May 2020, 35-year-old Marcin K. committed nearly 30 shoplifting offenses in Lubań. He stole various food products, alcohol, perfumes, cosmetics and hygiene products. The affected grocery stores and drugstores lost property worth a total of more than PLN 6,250.

Additionally, in October 2019, the man attempted to steal perfumes and other goods worth approximately PLN 500, but was caught in the act.

The prosecutor adds:

It was also established that Marcin K., who has no permanent place of residence, suffers from infectious tuberculosis. The man deliberately and without justification discontinued his treatment and consistently refused it despite several attempts to help him receive care. Aware that he was a carrier of an infectious disease, he exposed other people to infection while staying in public places, including while committing a series of thefts in stores where other people were present, thereby creating an epidemiological threat.

The suspect was also charged with insulting a security guard employed at one of the robbed stores.

The man was presented with a total of four charges. He faces between six months and as many as eight years in prison.

Prosecutor T. Czułowski: “Due to concerns that K. may again commit an offense against life or health, as well as concerns that the suspect may flee or obstruct the proceedings, the Lubań District Prosecutor’s Office submitted a successful motion for the suspect’s pre-trial detention for a period of three months from the date of his arrest.”
