As reported by dziennik.pl, during the May Day weekend police officers will be closely observing travelers on Polish roads.

Sub-Inspector Radosła Kobryś from the Road Traffic Bureau of the National Police Headquarters told dziennik.pl:

No one wants to target drivers’ wallets. We appeal for common sense. The simplest way to keep your finances from being reduced by a possible fine is to drive in accordance with the regulations.

And if a roadside check does take place, the police officer may conduct a sobriety test, inspect the vehicle’s technical condition, and verify compliance with the rules concerning movement during the pandemic, including the use of masks.

Let us recall that masks are mandatory in a car if it is occupied by people who are “strangers” to one another—that is, people who do not live together or share a household. (Details in the article Who, where and when must wear a mask?).

The dziennik.pl service:

When establishing a person’s identity during a roadside check, an officer may require them to uncover their mouth and nose. As we were told at the National Police Headquarters, imposing fines for failing to wear a mask is a last resort for the police. However, failure to respond to an instruction may have costly consequences. The fine is PLN 500, while the administrative penalty ranges from PLN 5,000 to PLN 30,000.
