The mushroom-picking season is unfortunately associated with people going missing in the forest. Some time ago, a 71-year-old man went missing. Intensive efforts by the services from Bolesławiec (police officers, firefighters and soldiers) lasted as long as three days. And… the missing man was found—safe and sound—in the Legnica County area.
What safety rules should mushroom pickers remember?
- inform your loved ones about your trip to the forest and indicate the area where you will be staying; let them know when you plan to return
- take reflective elements or flashlights with you; thanks to them, you will be more visible at night
- keep a mobile phone with you, as it may be useful in emergency situations
- if you take a dog, be sure to keep it on a leash
- do not carry valuables with you to avoid losing them
- for safety reasons, do not enter military training grounds—as, among other things, there is a risk of unexploded ordnance
- if you take children or elderly people with you, do not let them out of your sight
- remember distinctive features of the area, such as the numbers on boundary markers; thanks to them, you will be able to find your way back more quickly
- if a person gets lost, becomes separated from the group and remains in the forest for an extended period, they should contact the nearest police unit at the emergency number 997 or 112 and, if possible, report where they are. (Look for a granite boundary marker; the number shown on the marker will allow the location of the missing person to be determined quickly)
- importantly, if the missing person finds their own way out, they should immediately notify the police that they no longer need assistance.
IN ADDITION:
- when going to the forest, secure your vehicle properly: lock the doors and windows, and leave the car in a visible place so that it does not become an easy target for thieves
- do not leave valuable items in the vehicle (navigation equipment, a laptop, a mobile phone, a handbag, a wallet, documents).
