The incident occurred several days ago in Smolec near Wrocław. The driver of a passenger car was travelling towards Spółdzielców Street. At one point, the pedestrian, who had been walking along the pavement, suddenly stepped onto the crossing, directly in front of the approaching vehicle. The footage shows the driver trying to avoid the woman at the last moment.

Unfortunately, the 17-year-old was hit and taken to hospital with a broken arm. What is more, the photographs also show that the young woman was staring intently at her phone screen, even while stepping onto the road.

Wrocław Municipal Police Headquarters:

We are publishing the footage [...] as a warning, to make road users aware of how important it is to observe the roadway carefully.

The officers add:

The appeal saying “LOOK AND LISTEN” can therefore be addressed both to pedestrians and to vehicle drivers. The area around pedestrian crossings is a place where drivers should always exercise particular caution.

Who is responsible for the accident?

Officers from the Police Station in Kąty Wrocławskie are conducting proceedings into the incident. The police say: “It is not clear-cut, because every driver should exercise particular caution at a pedestrian crossing, just as people using the crossing should. A pedestrian should not suddenly step in front of a vehicle without making sure that they can safely enter the roadway.

An expert in road accidents will be appointed to the case, and their opinion will be crucial in determining who caused the accident.
